Emerging Leaders Program

You're already in it!

The co-curricular Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is designed to educate, engage and empower all Detroit Mercy students. Using the “Social Change Model (jpg),” (Long Description of Social Change Model) the ELP offers students the opportunity to explore their leadership potential through involvement in programs, events and activities centered on learning, leadership, spirituality and service, both on and off campus.

Through this recognition program, all Detroit Mercy students have the opportunity to live out the University Â鶹APP.  As a student who lives Detroit Mercy's Â鶹APP, you will learn to exhibit leadership for the common good. and develop leadership for the common good.

Â鶹APP who engage in leadership and service across campus in formal and informal ways, meet the criteria to earn the a Leadership Pin or Leadership Medallion which are awarded annually each March at the University Honors Convocation awards ceremonies.

How to Join

  1. Please view the ELP presentation and the ELP Requirement Checklist.
  2. Send an email to elp@udmercy.edu stating your interest.
  3. Begin logging your leadership and service by completing the .

Service Verification Form

The Service Verification form is essential to record your community service hours as a part of the Pin & Medallion requirements. Service needs to be documented so students have a chance to reflect on their experience and that way the Institute can properly recognize students for their contributions to the community.  

The Service Verification Forms are required to be submitted to elp@udmercy.edu.

    Ready to obtain the Emerging Leader Medallion or Pin?

    If you are graduating in May, you must contact  ELP@udmercy.edu by February 15 to let us know of your intent to receive these awards at the March Honors Convocation.  All requirements must be completed and submitted to the ELP Form by March 15.  Exceptions can be made for the completion of the Leadership Capstone course if you are enrolled in your final semester.

    FAQs

    Q: How should I indicate my intent to receive the Pin and/or Medallion?
    A: Fill out the Google Form (link located below), at the latest by February 15th of the year you are graduating. Feel free to email elp@udmercy.edu with any questions.

    Q: Where can I find events to ensure I obtain these hours?
    A: These events will be posted in areas such as BB, Raftr, and throughout the campus.

    Q: Do I have to have all of my requirements met by the above deadlines?
    A: You must have emailed your intent by February 15th of your graduating year. All of your requirements, including a reflection essay, must be done by March 15th of the same year.

    Q: How long does my reflection essay have to be?
    A: The essay should thoroughly answer the reflection questions about what you have learned in each of the five areas and how it enhanced your capacity to lead. The questions can be found on the ELP page, under the reflection essay tabs. Typically, students will submit around 2-4 pages.

    Q: When will the Group Reflection sessions occur for the Medallion awardees? 
    A: The sessions will be scheduled during the last week of February.

    Q: What happens if I do NOT complete the requirements or the essay on time?
    A: You will not be awarded the recognition (pin or medallion) at the scheduled event. But you can still earn them at a later date upon completion of all requirements. Hopefully, you can earn them before graduation so that you can wear your pin or medallion with your cap and gown.

    Q: Do I need someone to review my service hours and sign off on them?
    A: Your service hours need to be signed by the event coordinator on the Service Verification Form. The form can be found on the ELP page or the Log Your Leadership & Service Google Form.

    Q: What if I did my service hours during my earlier years at Detroit Mercy or before I was involved in the Emerging Leaders Program?
    A: All your service hours conducted at Detroit Mercy count towards the awards. Including the hours served during any Service-Learning Courses. Hours served outside of Detroit Mercy also count towards these hours; a signed service-learning form is required for proof.

    Q: I am in the Honors Program. Does this qualify me for the Pin and Medallion?
    A: No, the honor requirements are not correlated with the ELP requirements. One must complete all requirements within the ELP program to receive their awards.

    Q: What are my hours that I have accumulated for the Honors Program?
    A: The Honors Program is separate from ELP – Please reach out to Fr. Tim for this information.

    Q: Can I count worked hours if they involve a leadership event?
    A: You can count them toward the leadership event/workshop, but not as service hours.

    Q: Where do I log all of this information for the Emerging Leaders Program?

Here, you will see links that are IMPORTANT TO SAVE, as they will provide you with access to your form and provide the ability to edit your activities. After each submission, you will receive a confirmation to your university email.
